In February of 2005 I first taught pysanka-making at the Low Cost Effective Care Unit (Ida Scudder Ward) of Christian Medical College in Vellore, India. None of the participants had ever made–or seen–pysanky before, but a few were acquainted with the practice of batik.  It was late February and quite hot; we couldn’t turn on the fans for fear of blowing out the candles.
