The Plates

The highlight and the largest part of Binyashevsky’s book was the plates.  They consisted of watercolors of 140 traditional pysanky and one ancient ceramic pysanka, two to a page, on facing pages. The pysanky were grouped by ethnographic regions, and arranged in an order I have yet to be able to discern (zig-zag across Ukraine?) in the book.

The pysanky were each given a name; whether these names are traditional ones, or thought up by Binyashevsky, I cannot be certain.  Many were taken from Kulzhynsky’s and other albums of traditional pysanky, where they had no given names.  I’ve included the page number (17-87), and noted whether the egg was left (L) or right (R) on that page.  I’ve also included the name given by Binyashevsky, both in Ukrainian and translated into English.

There are many ways to divide Ukraine into regions; in each case I have noted where Binyashevsky’s assigned region would fall into my regional scheme.
