Chornyi Potik

Чорний Потік

 
 
Chornyi Potik, a Hutsul village in Nadvirna raion (of Ivano-Frankivsk oblast), is nestled in the wood of the Hutsul part of the carpathian mountains.  The name of the village comes from that of a stream that runs through it: «чроний потік» means black (aka dark) stream.  The area was once known for its opryshky; today it is better known for its colorful and intricate pysanky.

The pysankarky of Chornyi Potik use a technique known as spot dyeing to achieve this wealth of color. They write the white lines on an egg, and then use a toola pointed stick or a fine brush–to paint in small details with pink, purple, blue or green dye. This is demonstrated in the photo below of pysankarka Oksana Vasylyshyn (taken by Yuriy Atamniuk):


These areas are waxed in, and then the usual dye progression is used.  The result is gorgeous pysanky like the ones in the photos below.
