The sokal region is a distinct ethnographic area in northern Lviv oblast, called in the past “Halyts’ka Volyn,” as it is a transition area between Galicia/Halychyna to the south, and Volyn to the north.  Its folk arts have characteristics of both regions.

In modern times it is best know for its black embroidery and floral pysanky.
