An example of Hutsul ceramic tiles with rams (left)
These pysanky are the work of a few artisans in the Kosiv area of Hutsulshchyna. They are created by first painting a wooden egg white, and then layering on other colors of paint, light to dark, finishing with the black outline.
The designs are usually traditional Hutsul ones, and the color usage and motifs are similar to those of decorative white Hutsul pottery, or of Hutsul embroidery. This technique is sometimes used to create icon pysanky as well.
