Ivanychi Internat School Museum

Ivanychi is a small town located in the southwestern part of Volyn oblast, but in the northwestern part of Ukraine. In that town is a small, older internat – a government boarding school for special needs children.

Although space is limited, the school has set aside one room as a small ethnographic museum.  The teachers and children have worked together to create this museum.  They’ve created a replica of  a traditional house, including the large central “pich” (a stove with room on it for sleeping and sitting. They  bring in in antique embroideries and household objects from their home villages to fill this room.  And they’ve created items themselves to further demonstrate local culture and traditions.

Among the items in this museum were several pysanky.  A few are traditional local patterns, others were created by the children, and one bowl has wooden ones collected by one of the townspeople.  Interesting to me are the plates with built in egg holders which display the children’s own pysanky.
