Inside this modern looking metallic shell is an older Soviet building, which once housed the “Museum of Komsomol Glory,” and which dates back to the first half of the 20th century.
After Independence, the museum was repurposed and, in 1995, an archeological museum was created. The museum was opened in 1996, this date being chosen purposely to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of V. Khvoyka’s discovery of the first known Trypillian site on the outskirts of this town.
The museum encompasses all of Trypillian history, not just the eponymous Neolithic culture, although that is given the most prominence. There is also a small ethnographic display which includes embroideries, icons, pottery, carved wood and a bowl of local pysanky.
A close-up of the pysanky:
The label reads: Pysanky of Kyivshchyna, re-created from the catalogue of O.P. Skarzhynskyi
Maria Videyko, 2002
There were also several interesting painting at the entrance to the exhibits which mixed together Trypillian imagery and pysanky. Two of them are shown here:
The museum is lovely and well worth a visit. It is just a short walk up a hill from the bus stop on the main highway. Marshrutky from Kyiv will let you off here. Their address and phone number:
