Cherkasy (Черкаси): a city in central Ukraine. It is the capital of the Cherkasy oblast, and has been known since the 13th century.  Cherkasy, city and region, played a great role in the history of Ukraine. Cherkasy was the center of Kozaks, and its citizens took part in Khmelnychyna and Koliyivshchyna (cossacks' and peasants' rebellions).  Taras Shevchenko comes from this region.

Ethnographically, the city and oblast fall into the Середнє Подніпров’я (Middle Dnipro/Dnieper) region; the pysanky of right bank Cherkashchyna are well documented due to the work of Mytsyk and Fusyn. 

Chornyi Potik (Чорний Потік): literally “Black Stream,” it is a Hutsul town in Nadvirnianskyi raion.  Chornyi Potik is renowned for its distinct style of pysanka decoration, as in the example on the right from the Pysanka Museum in Kolomyia: gold and white on a black background, with spot-dyed pink, blue and purple motifs.

citric acid: a weak organic tricarboxylic acid having the chemical formula C6H8O7. It occurs naturally in citrus fruits. Citric acid is sold as "sour salt", due to its physical resemblance to table salt. It has use in culinary applications, as an alternative to vinegar or lemon juice, where a pure acid is needed. It is used by some to acidify aniline (acid) dyes in place of vinegar.

cochineal: a natural red dye made from crushed scale insects.  In Europe, it used to be produced in Poland and western Ukraine from female larvae of the Polish carmine scale insect which attached itself to the roots of several indigenous plants.  This dye was known as “Polish cochineal” and was supplanted in the 17th century by cheap cochineal from the Americas.

cosmomorphic: having the form of heavenly objects.  Cosmomorphic symbols are those shaped like stars, suns, etc..

cuticle: the outer layer of an egg (most poultry).  This layer is largely composed of protein, and binds acid dyes.
