Z

Zabolotiv (Заболотів): a Pokuttian town which has a huge annual Easter market where pysanky from the region are sold.

Zakarpattya (Закарпаття): the Ukrainian name of Transcarpathia. The name means “beyond the
Carpathian mountains.”

zastupets (заступець): a type of spade/shovel.

zastuptsi (заступці): plural form of zastupets. It is the name given to a spade-shaped pysanka motif (right), and also a popular embroidery motif.

Zmiya (Змія): A serpent, the ancient Ukrainian god of the earth and its waters. He is often depicted on traditional folk pysanky in a stylized for: as a wave, a spiral or an “S.” Pronounced “ZMEE-yah”.

zoomorphic: having the form of an animal.  Zoomorphic symbols are those shaped like animals or parts of animals (paws, claws, cockscombs, beaks, etc.).
