Books

An Annotated Bibliography

Pysanka Books

My house is full of them, and a good number are books about pysanky and other Ukrainian topics.  On the following pages I hope to eventually have reviews of all the books listed in my detailed bibliography, a copy of which I have included on the next page.  I’ve made a good bit of progress towards this goal, but still have a way to go.  There are still books that haven’t even gotten listed in my bibliography, but I’ve begun to photograph (actually, scan)  my books (covers and sample pages), have gotten bibliographic information on most, and have reviewed quite a few.

You can read my annotated bibliography in the linked sections (one page per book with comments and review). The books are divided up as follows, and I have included the relevant part of the bibliography (with hyper-links) in each section:

Pysanka:  Books written in English1 (and other non-Slavic languages) on the subject of pysanky and other forms of egg decoration.

Писанка:  Ukrainian-language books on the subjects of pysanky and pysankarstvo (pysanka-making), featuring pysanky, and collections of loose pattern sheets and cards.

UGS:  Books and other informational material from the Ukrainian Gift Shop (Minneapolis, MN) about pysanky and pysankarstvo.

Articles:  Articles in the Ukrainian and English magazines and newspapers about pysanky and pysankarstvo.  When available, links will be provided to on-line versions. (In progress)

Multimedia:  DVDs, videotapes and other materials about pysanky and pysankarstvo.

Children:  Books about pysanky and egg decoration meant for children and their teachers.

Slavic Egg Decoration:  Books from other Slavic nations about egg decoration.  May or may not be in English.

Ukrainian Customs, Folk Traditions and Mythology:  Books which explore folk tradition and its pre-christian roots (primarily in Ukrainian).

Ukrainian Ethnography:  Books about the ethnographic regions, traditions, costumes and crafts of Ukraine.

Ukrainian History:  Books I have used as sources for all eras of Ukrainian history, from Paleolithic to modern.  Includes books about the Trypillian culture.

Other Related Subjects:  Books on subjects related to pysankarstvo , or books I have found useful in compiling this website (e.g. chemistry, natural dyes, snowflakes, etc.).

Please not that this is a work in progress, and there may be blank or unfinished pages.  There are also many more books to be added. Check back, as I will be adding more.

A good un-annotated bibliography of the pysanka compiled by Jurij Dobczansky of the UCNS can be  downloaded here.

  1. 1.Books which are mostly in Ukrainian but may have an introduction or limited amounts of text translated into English will be placed in the Ukrainian section.  Fully bilingual books will be mentioned in both sections.  Books available in multiple languages will be noted in both sections if I own multiple copies of the book; if not, mention will be made.
