Boikivshchyna

Geography

The Boiko region occupies all of the High Beskyd, the eastern part of the Middle Beskyd, the western part of the Gorgany Mountains, and the Middle Carpathian Depression south of these mountains. In the north the limits of the Boiko region coincide with the borderline of the Carpathians; in the south the region borders on the Middle Carpathian territory, inhabited by the lowlanders (dolyniaky), also known as Zakarpattians.

The Boikos are split between three countries, and three oblasts in Ukraine:

  1. Poland: south-easternmost part of Poland (Podkarpackie Voivodeship).

  2. Ukraine: central and western half of the Carpathians in Ukraine across such regions as the southern Lviv oblast (Skole, Turka, Drohobych, Sambir and Stary Sambir Raions), western Ivano-Frankivsk oblast (Dolyna and Rozhniativ Raions) and parts of the northeastern Zakarpattia oblast (Mizhhiria Raion)

  3. Slovakia: north-eastern areas

To the west of Boikos live Lemkos, and east or southeast - Hutsuls.
