Uman raion

Уманьський район

This raion is in the westernmost corner of Cherkasy oblast. The region is best known in Ukraine for being the site of Sofiyivskyi Park, a beautiful botanical garden.  In more recent years it has become a pilgrimage site for Breslov Hasidic Jews.

This area used to produce pysanky, several of which were collected and recorded by Danylo Shcherbakivskyi in the early 1900s. Two pysanky (XVI 1 & 2) were written in 1967 by Fedora Kuzmenko (Федора Кузьменко), from Kocherzhyntsi, who was born in 1916.

Mytsyk and Fysun included twelve pysanky from the Uman region in their book, with seven from the villages of Ropotukha (Ропотуха) (
) and Kocherzhyntsi (Кочержинці) (
).  Four others were simply labeled as being from the region.

Most of the pysanky below are recreated from their interpretations of Shcherbakivskyi’s line drawings.
