Zvenyhorodka raion

Звенигородський район

This raion is in central western Cherkasy oblast, near several other raions which are represented in this Mytsyk’s book.  It is an ancient region; settlements from the Paleolithic area have been excavated here.

There were two sources for the pysanky from this region: an anthology published in 1928 (“Zvenyhorodshchyna”), and the work of five local pysankarky.

Mytsyk and Fysun included 55 pysanky from the Zveyhorodka region in their book, from the villages of Skalyvatka (Скаливатка) (
), Sofiivka (Софіївка) and Husakove (Гусакове) (
). I cannot locate Sofiivka on any modern maps; the authors note that it was located near the village of Ryzynove (Ризинове) (
), which lies on the very western edge of the raion.  It is possible that the village changed its name and is now part of another raion.

The pysankarky who wrote the originals of the pysanky on this page were:

  1. Natalka Honchar (1916-1989) from Sofiivka; her pysanky were written in 1985.  № 4-10.

  2. Vasylyna Boiko (b. 1917) from Sofiivka; her pysanky were written in 1985.  № 11-19.

  3. Halyna Kornienko (b. 1960) from Sofiivka; her pysanky were written in 1984-1985.  № 20-29.

  4. Nina Ponomarenko (b 1930) from Husakove. № 30-40.

  5. Hanna Nedonosok (b1937) from Husakove; her pysanky were written in 1992.  № 41-55.

Those included in the anthology were from the village of Skalyvatka, № 1-3.

When writing these pysanky,  had some issues with the dye taking, so some were not reproduced exactly.  I will note the original colors where they differ from those shown.

Errors:

VI 17: there should be an equatorial dividing line, and two longitudinal dividing lines.

VII 38: there should be a second inset star in each of the top and bottom stars, with orange infill.
