When I first heard of this book in 2007, I thought that my creation of this annotated bibliography had been for naught–someone had beaten me to the punch.  But, having bought this book and perused it, I find that it is very different from my bibliography.

In this book Joan Brander (photo right) has created a much-needed bibliography of books and articles about pysanky.  It
is a bit non-standard as bibliographies go, being alphabetized by title instead of by author.  It is exhaustive, though, and almost all of the books I own that were written prior to early 2007 are included.

Joan divides her bibliography into sections:

    Pysanky (general)

    Children’s books

    Newsletters

    Favorite articles

    Audio-Visual

She also indexes all the works both chronologically and by author, making it easier to find the book (or article) you’re looking for.

My only quibble is that all the Ukrainian titles are transliterated in a non-standard fashion.  I have gotten used to modern standard Ukrainian transliteration, so this throws me off when I am searching for Ukrainian books.  I would have liked to see the citations for these books in Ukrainian (Cyrillic) as well, but that is just my personal preference.

In the center she has eight plates with photos of covers of of many of the books, pamphlets and audiovisual materials from her bibliography. This plate features newsletters, magazines, VHS tapes and DVDs:

This is a useful book or someone interested in pysanka history and publications.  It is probably not of much use for the general reader, or someone looking for pysanka patterns.
