An essay was published in the Polish language “Rocznik Wołyński (Volyn Annual)” (1930, volume 1) which included photos of 117 traditional Ukrainian folk pysanky. The author of the article was Jakub Hoffmann, and the annual was published in Rivne by the Volynian Regional Board of the Polish Association for Common Schools.  The publication was full of useful information about local geography, geology, botany, folk celebrations and ethnography to be used by educators.

The pysanky were from several regions of those Volynian lands under Polish hegemony, and were photographed in groups in black and white plates like this:

The annual was published in the Polish language, in Ukraine, because Polonization was the official state policy, and schools were taught in the Polish language.

The pysanky in this article were from 35 separately named villages/towns and one “powiat” (raion/county), some of which no longer exist.  Tiny villages may have disappeared or been merged into bigger ones, and others have become border crossings (with Poland) or merely railway stations. I have plotted them onto the maps below of Volyn and Rivne oblasts; the green dots represent sites which I could not locate accurately, and I have placed them roughly in the center of the raion they were in.  There are three rough “clusters” of villages represented:  Northwest Volyn oblast (current Liuboml raion), south Volyn oblast, and south Rivne oblast, in the regions around Rivne city. 

Below, in table format, is a list of all the place names associated with pysanky, in Polish, Ukrainian and English.  If there are two names given, the first is the old name, and the second is the current name.
